Peter Hanink, Program Director. Peter Hanink came to the Disaster Accountability Project with the
belief that the failed responses to hurricanes Katrina and Rita should
never be allowed to be repeated. He first worked with DAP while he was
the Co-President of Brooklyn Law School's branch of the Student
Hurricane Network. He is a recent graduate of Brooklyn Law School
where he was a recipient of the Moot Court Honor Society Graduation
Award and a BLSPI Public Service Award. Before
law school, he was a public school teacher and Director of Community
Education for the Princeton Review of Los Angeles. During the Clinton
Administration, he was an intern in the White House Office of Political
Affairs. Peter earned a B.A. with Honors in Political Science from Loyola
Marymount University in Los Angeles.
Ben Smilowitz, Executive Director. Ben has extensive non-profit management
experience with a focus in youth civic engagement and strategic issue
campaigns. Ben started a national student organization, wrote successful
state legislation, and worked closely with former Missouri Gov. Bob
Holden as the designer and coordinator of the nation’s first Youth
Cabinet. Following Hurricane Katrina, Ben managed Red Cross Client Service Centers in Coastal Mississippi. Ben received a B.A. in Political Science and an Advanced Graduate Certificate in Nonprofit Management from Washington University in St. Louis. Ben recently completed his studies at the University of Connecticut
School of Law.
