Disaster Accountability Monitors and Bloggers

The Disaster Accountability Monitor and Blogger network is recruiting "Disaster Accountability Monitors" and "Disaster Accountability Bloggers" across the nation, in every state and community.

One key component of this project is to make sure gaps in critical relief services are discovered, publicized, and addressed. The sooner gaps in services are realized, the faster they'll be addressed-- especially when organizations, relief agencies, and the government are exposed for not doing their jobs.

Sign Up To Be A Monitor

In the event of a disaster, monitors will:

1) disseminate the toll-free hotline.

2) assist individuals with reporting gaps.

3) help verify reported gaps.

4) help publicize gaps.

    I recently signed up to serve as a Disaster Accountability Monitor and I'm writing to encourage you to sign up to serve as one, too.

    The premise is this: After Katrina, there were countless gaps in disaster relief services that might have been addressed had the public known about each of them. While disasters are inherently messy and even the best planning cannot prevent all relief effort problems. Gaps in critical services are likely to cause more suffering, especially when they are not addressed. When Disaster Accountability Monitors shine the light on these gaps, they are more likely to get addressed.

    Disaster Accountability Monitors have four key functions:

    1) disseminate the toll-free hotline number (866-9-TIP-DAP)
    2) assist individuals with reporting gaps in disaster response/relief services
    3) help verify reported gaps
    4) help publicize gaps

    Each monitor signs up to "cover" a geographic region of their choosing. It can be a 5, 10, 25, 50 (or more) mile radius from your home. The Disaster Accountability Project (http://www.disasteraccountability.org) is trying to recruit enough monitors to "cover" the country... and you should consider signing up on their website to serve as a monitor.
